A fellow UST Alumunus fell victim to hazing...

Belonging to a family of lawyers, 22-year-old Marc Andrei Marcos was set to follow in their footsteps. But the dream became a nightmare when the first year law student was apparently beaten to death in a suspected hazing ritual and died in a hospital on Monday.

"Let's just say na yung arms niya at yung legs niya kulay ube. 'Yun ang sinasabi ko sa gumawa sa kanya. Kulay ube. Medyo masakit yung pagkamatay niya," said Atty. Jose Vener Ibarra, Marcos' uncle.

A Cavite police report received by GMA News Online Tuesday said that Marcos had been "mauled" by unidentified assailants on a farm in Dasmariñas, Cavite, and was brought to De La Salle University Medical Center in Dasmariñas by a certain Soledad Sanda, a cook of the Veluz family living in Dasmariñas. A Veluz son, Gian Veluz, is a fourth-year law student at San Beda Alabang, according to the police, but is not yet considered a suspect.

Andrei's family members believe he was undergoing initiation rites by the Lex Leonum fraternity composed of San Beda law students.

Marcos was the second reported death from alleged hazing in the San Beda Law community in this year alone. Marvin Reglos, 25, died in February allegedly after a violent hazing ritual by members of the Lambda Rho Beta fraternity.

Family didn't know about fraternity

A first-year law student at San Beda College, Marcos had told his family he was going to work on a class project last Saturday. When Sunday night arrived and Marcos had not come home, his family began to worry.

His aunt said she contacted Globe telecom to try and trace Marcos' whereabouts.

"Ako ang nakapangalan doon sa line na na kay Andrei, so I explained to Globe kung ano 'yung circumstance and they gave me the information doon sa nacontact niya noong Friday and Saturday, so they gave us a number and we called that number," said Marimir Marcos Rivera in an interview on Unang Balita on Tuesday.

Rivera said that it appeared the number belonged to a student of San Beda, who promised them he would find out what happened to Marcos.

Two hours later, the family received a text message from a supposed batchmate of Marcos. They were informed that Marcos' condition was stable, but they were not told where he was. Instead, they were instructed to meet with them the next day at a fastfood chain in Manila.

"Noong first na nakausap nung kapatid ko, there were talks about a possible joining of a fraternity. When we talked to this other person, this batch mate, ayaw ibigay ang information kung saang hospital," Rivera said.

At 3 p.m. on Monday, the family met with two supposed batchmates of Marcos, who confirmed he had gone through initiation rites.

"Ang sabi nila kasama nila si Andrei sa initiation. Piniga namin sila, kailangan mapiga pa yung information from them... They were emphasizing that we should be cooperating with them for the sake of Andrei," Rivera said.

But it was too late. From the DLSU Medical Center in Dasmariñas, Cavite, Marcos' body was immediately brought to the Philippine National Police crime laboratory, where an autopsy was done. The official results have not yet been released, but according to a relative of Marcos who had seen the body, it appeared he suffered heavy blows.

Condemn violence

As of posting time, San Beda College has yet to release an official statement on the matter, but officials from the San Beda Law Student Government condemned the incident.

"We condemn violence in San Beda and that is why the Law Student Government and the San Beda College of Law administration will fully cooperate with any investigation that will bring light to this matter," said Aubin Nieva, president of the San Beda Law Student Government.

After the autopsy, Marcos' remains were brought to Ramos, Tarlac, for a private burial. The San Beda Law Student Government earlier requested that the body be brought to San Beda, but they were refused by Marcos' father, the Unang Balita report said.

While investigators have not confirmed which fraternity conducted the initiation rites, Marcos' family appealed for any of its members to come forward.

"It pains us more not knowing what they had done to Andrei. Ang masakit po sa amin, pinabayaan po si Andrei. Iniwanan sa hospital nang mag-isa. And he was not given the attention that he should have had, had his family been at the hospital with him," said Rivera.

"Any useful info will be greatly appreciated and we will absolutely protect you," tweeted Marcos' brother Mervin on Tuesday.

According to a dzBB report on Tuesday, Ibarra said a female is in the custody of the Cavite police, and is currently being investigated by authorities.

As of last March, several members of the San Beda-based group, including its highest official, were facing charges of murder and violation of the Anti-Hazing Law, an earlier report said.

Reglos' mother, Myrna, said her son's death was a window to the dark side of fraternities. "Ang pagkamatay ng aking anak ay bittersweet. Bitter dahil nawala sa amin, lalo sa amin. Sweet dahil siya ang eye-opener ng mga bata na pag pumasok sila sa college ay alam na nila ang ibig sabihin ng frat," she said in a previous report.

The San Beda College of Law also vowed to cooperate with the probe conducted by the PNP and the National Bureau of Investigation

Another person fell victim to Frat initiation in the form of Carl Intia, a student of the University of Makati. He was to join one of the biggest Fraternities in the Philippines, the Alpha Phi Omega. He was found dead in a cliff in Laguna. Well that's what I remember from the news a few days ago.

We already have anti-hazing law but initiation rites like these are still rampant. Even my own Alma Mater the University of Santo Tomas is poisoned by this kind of act but it is underground. you need to have the right connections to even know that such acts exist. I'm happy that I am not tangled in that web of shadows. I'm already covered with the Central political filth.

Anyway, why is it important to undergo these initiation rites anyway? Is this some kind of special baptism that one should first do before being welcomed to the brotherhood? I am at lost here.

As a Filipino, I think I'm very much compelled to blog about the 1st State of the Nation Address of our incumbernt president. Although, I wasn't able to watch the whole thing, I am able to read the transcript of his speech at Pep.ph.

The 1st part of my blog is about the SONA itself. I will be attempting to write my views as objectively as I can without prejudice of the news that I heard after the SONA. To put it simply, this my view regarding the RAW SONA speech.

Raw SONA
I would like to compliment P-noy in giving his speech in Filipino. I mean, since he is addressing a nation of having less than 100% literacy rate, it's good that he addressed them in the language that they can understand.

I am very much aware that the 1st SONA of an incumbent president is the eyeopener. This is the chance of the newly elected president to have a tell-all speech in which he/she can openly express the problems that he/she will be inheriting from the previous administration. In P-noy's case, although I am expecting these revelations, I was still stunned when I heard about the misappropriation and misuse of the taxpayer's money.

This is also the chance to brag about what he/she had done in his time as president before the SONA. It is pretty evident that Pnoy is very satisfied in what his Cabinet members had done. I just wish that this is not a so called ningas kugon and still continues in their 6 year reign.

In the opening statements, I just feel like it's the continuation of his campaign material with the Daang matuwid, daang baluktot speeches. I would have appreciated it more if would refrain from stating those words in every speech he will give in the future.

He wants to start the public-private partnerships which I think is a good step. Since we have a large balloon deficit in our budget, the rent-develop-money equation sounds good to me. They rent the place, they develop it, give jobs to the locals and pays tax. It's sounds surreal but I think it's feasible.

I'm disappointed in his call to amend some of the existing laws. I mean, he should have pointed out the flaws and what should be the changes to be done on it. Since he already expressed his intent for its amendment, I assume he already read the said bills and should therefore should have given ample explanation in what changes to be made.

In conclusion, I didn't have the heebeegeebees that I was expecting. Maybe because the speech itself lacks the strong standpoint that should have been there. There were lots of pagpaparinig but that's all there is to it. There were no statements to punish those who had done wrong in the past administration. Just those who are doing red tape activities and tax evaders. But I would have wanted to hear that he will do his best to punish those who had laundered the government funds and used it inappropriately. There's one person in my mind. Clue: she flew to HongKong the night before the SONA. *wink*

In terms of Physics, P-noy's SONA is a vector. I see the direction that he's pointing but unfortunately, the magnitude or the strength of the vector seems very vague and has no corporeal foundation. I wish that in the next SONA, this magnitude is sufficiently filled so as we have an idea how far are we moving forward.

Una kong nabasa ang istorya ni Niño Calinao sa Linking the World through English IV book ko na siyang libro ko sa English nung 4th year high school ako. Si Niño Calinao ay estudyante ng UP. Ang pamilya nya ay kapos sa buhay kung kaya't siya ay nagsisipag mag-aral. Meron pa ngang oras na nag-camping sya sa Sunken Garden para yung pamasahe nya sana pauwi ay magagamit nyang almusal kinabukasan. Sa kasamaang palad, nabiktima si Niño ng mistaken identity. Pinatay siya sa pag-aakalang miyembro siya ng kalabang frat ng mga pumtay sa kanya. Honestly, naawa ako kay Niño nung nabasa ko yung kapiranggot na yugto ng buhay niya. Siguro kasi, sayang. malay mo, since 1991 pa nangyari yon, Senador na sya ngayon at wala nang corruption sa Pilipinas dahil sa kanya. Isang promising na tao, sinayang dahil lang sa Frat War.

Si Lenny Villa ay graduating student ng Ateneo Law School. Biktima sya ng hazing. Actually merong batas against hazing. Merong karampatang kaparusahan pag napatunayang ginawang initiation ang hazing sa pagpasaok sa isang organization. Kasama sa Right to organize ang pag buo ng mga organizations. Kaya hindi pwedeng idecree ng pamahalaan na iabolish ang mga Fraternity at Sorority. Unfortunately for Lenny, nung panahon nya wala pa ang batas against hazing. Too bad. Sana as a lawyer, he could've known better.

September 2007, pumutok ang balita na meron nanamang namatay dahil sa hazing. Isa na namang UP student sa katauhan ni Chris Mendez. Graduating student din siya. Panganay sa dalawang anak. Ang tatay nya mekaniko sa Qatar. Ginagapang silang pamilya na naiwan dito sa Pilipinas. Si Chris na sana ang pag-asa ng pamilya, siya ang bread-winner. Pero katulad nung kina Lenny at Niño, nasayang din sya. Sa nabasa ko, narinig, at napanood, mata lang daw ang walang latay sa katawan ni Chris. Punong puno ng pasa at maga ang buong katawan nya. Merong animation na ni-flash sa screen nung binabalita yun, nihaha-highlight yung mga body parts nya na talagang severe yung bruises. Pati yung mukha nya meron din eh! My God! Kung ako mag-o-autopsy sa kanya, feeling ko maiiyak ako.

Napanood ko ulet kagabi yung episode ng Kapuso mo, Jessica Soho tungkol dun sa Hazing. Grabeh ang visuals talaga, nakablur lang yung mukha. Pero grabeh. Pag pumapalo, bumebwelo pa. Tapos, yung isang neophyte na si Grace, babae sya ah, pinaluhod, tapos pinagsasasampal, tinatadyakan, sinusuntok sa braso. Tapos nun, pinatayo sya, talagang hinampas sa may baba ng pwetan, Umaray at napaiyak sya! Habang naghuhumyak sa sakit si Grace, tumatawa yung mga “masters” nyang lalake. In her interview with Jessica Soho, pilit na pinagdidildilan ni Grace kay Ms. Jessica na pagmamahal daw yung ginagawa sa kanyang pagpapahirap. Ang sabi pa, “hindi mo matatandaan yung sinasabi nila sayo pag hindi ka sinasaktan.” Kitang kita ko sa mukha ni Ms. Jessica na hindi nya talaga magrasp yung idea ng pagmamahal na yan. Honestly ako rin. Meron naman si Josh, neophyte din, inutusan ng master nya ng kung ano ano, pinagpumping, squatt, duck walk, pinasayaw,at pinakamatindi, pinahalikan at pinadilaan yung rubber shoes nung master! Para saken, walang pinagkaiba ang scouting sa fraternity. Pareho kasi silang may superiors. Ibig sabihin merong mataas na tao sa akin kung hindi ako ang pinakamataas. Merong mag-uutos sa akin, na kailangan kong sundin, kasi yun ang Oath na ginawa ko.

Hindi ko na kailangan pa yang mga frat frat at scouting na yan. Meron na akong mga kaibigan. Meron akong BnBp family nung high school ako. At ChE batch 2010, at ang CSC family ngayong college na ako. Hindi rin naman kasi uso ang Frat sa course ko na Chemical Engineering. Madalas kasi, para makapasa sa board, sumasali sila sa frat. Usually para yun sa mga post graduare degrees like Law, Medicine, etc.

Baket nga ba sila sumasali sa Frat? Dahil wala daw iwanan pag nasa loob ka na. Tutulungan ka nila, hindi lang sa loob ng ng iskwelahan kundi ang mahalaga pag nasa labas kana. Madali kang makakapasok sa trabaho. Meron ka agad mahihingan ng tulong pag may problema ka.

Honestly, minsan din akong nagging beneficiary ng isang frat. Yung Kuya Argie ko ay miyembro ng Phi Sigma Gamma ng Fraternity sa Faculty of Medicine and Surgery ng UST. Nung nagkasakit ako, nahospitalize ako for 1 and a half day, at nag Doctor ko ay isang Consultant tapos walang bayad. Benefits daw yun ng pagiging “brod”. Bali ang binayaran lang namin ay yung room lang, nothing more.

Nung neophyte pa si Kuya, nakaranas din sya ng Hazing. Buti nalang mga doctor na yung pumalo sa kanya, alam nila kung anong magiging epekto pag nagkamali sila. Naawa ako sa mother ko nun. Iyak yun ng iyak nung umuwi si Kuya na puro pasa sa katawan. Masyado pa akong bata nun kaya hindi ko pa naintindihan masyado yon. Pero nakatatak sa isip ko, kung pano umiyak si mother dear, at kung anong itsura ng isang parte ng katawan na namamaga at may pasa na kulay ube.

Meron nakapagkwento sa akin nung pumunta ako sa isang Human Rights Seminar on Youth ng Amnesty International, na pag miyembro ka dawn g Frat tapos, yung examiner mo sa board or bar eh miyembro ng Frat mo, sure ball pasado ka na daw. Hindi ko sya naconfirm. Pero I doubt na yung ibang tao na nakapasa ng board or bar. Pumasa ba sila dahil deserving sila? O pumasa sila dahil Brod sila?

QUEZON CITY, Philippines - A 34-year-old man has filed a P26-million suit against cosmetic surgeons Manny and Pie Calayan for doing a penis enlargement operation on him that he claims left him with a deformed organ that he could not use for sex because it was painful.

He also said the aqua gel used in the operation has spread in his penis and could be give him a tumor.

In a complaint filed at the Makati City Prosecutors Office, Louem Martinez, 34, complained of being "physically incapacitated" and "mentally devastated."

Martinez agreed to be interview by Susan Enriquez, who filed a report aired on Friday over 24 Oras, GMA Network's early evening newscast.

Martinez also filed criminal cases of reckless imprudence resulting to serious physical injury and obstruction of justice against the Calayans, who own and operate the Calayan SurgiCenter in Legaspi Village, Makati.

Martinez got to know about the Calayan Surgicenter through its website while he was working in the US last year.

He then got interested in the "Penile Enlargement/Thickening and Lengthening Services" the Calayans were offering, so he went to Manila in March last year to check it out.

In their consultations, he said Dr. Manny Calayan assured him of his expertise, having performed the same operation – using a substance called aqua gel – at a rate of two per month.

Calayan assured Martinez the operation would widen and lengthen his penis without any deformity, sagging, and bumps and without any side effects.

Martinez recalled that he had met with Calayan about four times on different dates at the Calayan Surgicenter and talked to him twice over the phone.

"Doctor Calayan always assured, reassured, confirmed, and reconfirmed to me his expertise to handle such penis enlargement/widening operation and its safety and success," he recounted.

The operation eventually took place on Sept. 24, 2007.

Martinez said that at the operation room, he asked a certain woman who administered to him the anesthesia about the expertise of Calayan on penis enlargement.

"I believed all the presentations, assurances, reassurances, confirmation and reconfirmation then of Dr. Calayan and the anesthetist, the very reasons why I agreed to be operated by him", Martinez said in his complaint.

Martinez said the Calayans charged him P145,000, which included the fee for the liposuction of his cyst.

After the operation, Martinez said he took the medicine prescribed to him by Calayan. But even after a few months of usage, he noticed that his penis remained "badly deformed, sagged, and bumped." And he could still feel pain in his penis, scrotum, and surrounding area until now.

Calayan, he said, assured him that it was all temporary, but the pain and deformity persisted, prompting him to ask his lawyer to inform the Calayans of his physical predicament.

Still Calayan made no further action to alleviate his suffering.

"I went back to the United States and physicians I consulted said that the aqua gel is cancerous," Martinez said.

He said another plastic surgeon he had consulted confirmed the distortion and sagging of his penis.

He pointed out that another doctor in the US that he consulted told him that the use of aqua gel in his penis operation would lead to "adverse unknown possibilities."

Martinez claimed that the penis operation of Calayan has "practically destroyed or stolen his manhood and further, deprives him of a future family of his own because such operation could render him impotent for life, suffer diseases and may cause his untimely death."

He said he would not have undergone such operation without the misrepresentation made by the Calayans on their "expertise" in penal enlargement.

Martinez is demanding from the Calayan Surgicenter P20 million for his physical injury and P6 million for moral and exemplary damages. - GMANews.TV
