Once upon a Dyosa: TYK 2nd floor Restroom

I clearly remember this awkward moment (well... for me at least...) during the Thomasian Welcome Walk 2009...

The event, which was spearheaded by the UST Central Student Council, came to an end in smashing success. It was a very tiring day for the officers and the staff having to endure a planning session in the morning, then do each of our assigned duties for the event that started early afternoon and lasted early evening. Committee heads like yours truly have dual assignments, as I am the head of the First Aid Booth as well as a runner for one of the OSA (Office for Student Affairs) staff.

I came back to the office to get a whiff of cold air to freshen up. All the running plus the hot temperature of the afternoon opened up all the sweat glands in my body. Not to mention, uber tired for the same reasons.

I sat down on our desk (actually, the Office of the Auditor's desk) with a big thud. The aircon doing its job of relieving the hot stresses of the day's event. After getting comfy for a bit, I decided to go the restroom to wash up the grime even for just the face and arms.

During our time, the 2nd floor restroom of the Tan Yan Kee Student Center is for the exclusive use of the OSA Staff, VIPs, and the Student Leaders whose offices are located on the floor which are CSC and SOCC. CSC 08-09 provided a special keyholder for the key the restroom which was inherited by CSC 09-10. The restroom key was inside a key ring that is attached to a big wooden key figure.

I took the ginormous key of comfort and proceeded to the restroom. Cloud nine feelings of contentment envelop me as the cool water slowly cleanses my skin. I bought a facial cleanser for the sole purpose of washing up after the end of the day. I learned this lesson during the last CSC event that clean up is a must after every event and bring your own cleaning agents. I generously used both the cleanser and the cool water to satisfy my end of event wash up routine.

When I came back to the office, a handful of staff and officers were already there. Everyone cheered congratulations to each other for a very successful event. Of course, though there is an air of happiness, it is tainted by the desire to freshen up from the tiring activity. We found leftover shirts from last year's Paskuhan. After getting consent from the officers to use it, I took one that is my size and returned to the restroom to change.

Of course since I'm a Dyosa, I went straight to the cubicle to change upon entering the rest room. Two other male staff came in the restroom while I was changing. It didn't took a light year for me to change so I got out of the cubicle fast. They were having a conversation while I came out. I smiled at them went straight to lavatory and fixed my hair with the water. When I looked in the mirror...

there it was... A slow mo awkward moment...

The two male staff slowly (well in my mind since its a slow mo moment) lifted their shirts to their heads. Revealing their boyish non toned slim physiques. During this time, my faux jaw that is invisible to others dropped to the floor of course in slow mo fashion as well. They revealed a smile after removing their shirts and continued their conversation while I just stood their in silence trying not to freak out while in between two half naked guys. Both of them are not really gwapo, but one is really appealing sexually, while the other one has really a charming smile.

One of them asked me if I had a soap, I pointed to the available hand soap, trying to act cool amidst the confusion with the situation. After tossing my hair just a bit more, I decided to leave, but not before I had a final look at the fine reward that was given to me for a job well done.

Haha!

Reigning Electric Chair Queen

"WILBERT! WILBERT! WILBERT! WILBERT! WILBERT!"

May I take off my four eyes.

Tumayo.

Shunggal ang headband.

Nag-hairflip.

PAK!! VODKA!!! My poison of choice!

Chows!

"GO!!!"

[Inset BGM with Mariah Carey vocals!] I can make it through the rain!!! I will make lagok once again!!!

At dahil parang jutengga nalang yung bumabagsak, itinaas ko pa yung bote ni koya. Yung hawak nya ah!

PIKPAKBOOM!!!

In 1 minute, nakaubos ako ng 1.5 BOTTLES of 40% VODKA! PAK!!!

Hiyawan galore na ang mga Party Animals!

Dyosa's Secret
Eto seryoso, hindi nako masyadong magbebeki language. Madali lang naman intindihin yung theory behind this pag may background ka sa Anatomy and Physiology. Well, Kuya ko kasi ay doktor that used to teach that subject tapos I am friends with loads of registered nurses. Also my interest in Temperence Brennan novels and series (which focuses in forensic anthropology) drove me to study the science.

I don't have a special units in Anatomy and Physiology but I gauged my mastery over the subject by acing the Major exams of my nursing friends (I answered their exams and had an average of 95%).

Anyway, please obeserve the picture below:

So sa picture makikita nyo after the tongue meron parang extension which is called the Epiglottis. It's a cartilage meaning a soft bone. Beyond the mouth kasi we have a space called the Pharynx. Afterwards, it will split into two tracts: the Esophageal and the Laryngeal Tracts. Its common knowledge that the Esophagus is connected to the stomach and the Larynx to the lungs.

So when you breathe air, the pathway is in default towards the Laryngeal tract But when you swallow food or drink, the epiglottis will act as a barrier and will close the tract to the larynx and the food will be delivered towards the esophagus. That is why you can't breathe and swallow at the same time.

Now onto my secret. Kya nauubo yung iba dahil dun.

As for my skill in gulping na nakatingala. Practice makes perfect! Not the idea that you think of but with BEER BOMB!!! Sarap grabeh!

Next time ulet!!! Tandaan ang Dyosa Word of the night nung gabing yun!

BAWAL ANG KJ!!!

RH Bill, The Varsitarian: Of Lemonade and Lap Dogs

Evening of Monday, October 8, 2012, I read the most self-righteous and most egotistic editorial article I've ever read in The Varsitarian. It was very painful to read. Whip lashes burdened me as I read every paragraph to the end.

Haaaaaay!!!

Shattered Pride
This is the first time that The Varsitarian editorial and my opinion were on opposite poles. From the issues of the ROTC program change from compulsory to elective, to the statement of Mayor Alfredo Lim that "Patriotism is dying in the motherland."; to the inconsistencies in the USTH Tower, in all of these, both The Varsitarian and myself share the same strong standpoint. It is in this case that I consider The Varsitarian the last drop of my pride as a Thomasian. That is why it is most appalling that The Varsitarian published an article that not only is againts my views, it also belittles thinking professionals simply because they chose to be firm on their views.

This is yet again another reason why I am not at all sad that I was rejected for an Instructor post in my Faculty. During my interview, I was asked that if I was asked by the students regarding these issues, would I discuss the matter in class. I initially tried to dodge the question but eventually I answered it and I still stand firm on what I said:
"I would like to promote a class where students can freely speak their sentiments and views."
Somewhere along the interview I was able to express one of the fundamental reason why I am Pro-RH Bill:
"We are a Faculty that is based on technology, and contraceptives are products of that technology. If the technology can help us with our current social problems why not use it?

If professors are suppressed to voice out their real stand on issues, then it would be like college for me all over again. When asked why UST is my last choice for law school, I always say the same thing:
"There is this culture of suppression in UST that not all are aware of. I believe that being a lawyer, you would need to sharply question anything, and that simply is not the culture there."
Well, I always thought that only applies to students but after reading the article that the UST went so far as "reminding" the Faculty members of the University's stand:
obliged to uphold and show deference to their teaching authority whenever the bishops of the Church have spoken on an issue and have taken a stand in behalf of the Church,”
There was nothing left to do but spew out my intestines to express my utmost disgust. Elk!

Reaction of a Thomasian Chemical Engineer
There was no written name of the author in the article so I'll consider this as a collective statement of the of The Varsitarian staff. I will express a five-point reaction to the article: Open-mindedness, Lap dog, Technology, Catholic Education, Attack!

Open-mindedness. One thing I learned from being a homosexual, a student-leader, and a Thomasian Chemical Engineer, you need to be open-minded; There are things that are not easily grasped when you seclude yourself into a closetted space; There are people who will have different opinions about you; There are technical problems that are not solvable unless you try a different approach. These three identities fostered my open-mindedness and it has become who I am today.

Lap Dog.When I left the University, The Varsitarian was a beast. It clutches its fangs to its prey and attacks rabidly on issues that are in line with the student population. In all essence, it was a fierce Tiger. But now, I find it sad that the publication where I banked my last drop of pride as a Thomasian became nothing but a lap dog that barks its owner's ideals and bites those who are against it. (But the last I heard, its owner disowned them. Too bad.) Allow me to remind The Varsitarian that the real owners of the publication are the students. Hence, it is a student publication. Most of the Thomasians I know, both students and alumni, are Pro-RH Bill. I did not compel them to think that, it is their own freewill and conscience that they are supporting this bill. You might want to check the pulse of your real owners before howling the University's stand simply because you believe that the students think the same.

Technology and Authority. The Varsitarian is concerned about the ill effects of the contraceptive pill. Saying that it is medically proven that the pill has dangerous effects. I would like to ask from where did they take this information because if they are reading medical articles from 19-kopong kopong, I am sure that they had read grave effects of the pill. But we are of the age that everything is on the rush for improvement. The pills of old were phased out and came an improved pill. But this is not free from some side-effects but is far less as compared to the earlier versions. Well, that's the thing about technology, there will always be a price for whatever convenience we enjoy.

When speaking of the RH Bill, don't limit yourself with the contraceptive pill. The Bill tackles more than just the pill. Sex education, condoms, among others are enveloped in the Bill. The ADLSU professors argued that the RH measure would be needed to lower maternal mortality precisely because the Philippine government not too long ago had told the United Nations that it was on track to meet the UNESCO millennium development goals by 2015, one of which was the lowering of maternal deaths.

Maternal deaths should not be solely based on cardiac problems. Moreso, the contraceptive pill alone is not the only reason for these cardiac problems. The RH Bill may increase cardiac problems for women but it will decrease pregnancy deaths, HIV/AIDS proliferation, and Teenage pregnancies. Lower three factors, and increase one. It is still a win situation.

The Varsitarian slammed the ADMU and DLSU (ADLSU) professors for supporting the RH Bill amidst the effects of the contraceptive pill. Even going as far as questioning their intelligence and authority. In their words, it is implied that the ADLSU Professors cannot simply "dismiss the medically established dangerous side effects of contraceptives" because they are not physicians.

In case you don't know, the main sponsor of the RH Bill in Congress, Rep. Mitos Magsaysay, is a Medical Doctor by profession. I am sure we will agree that she is the most suitable authority on this issue in Congress. I heard her in debates and there was never an issue regarding the pill that she successfully gave convincing statements defending it.

I think this is a case of lack of research. Whether or not this is true, it is inexcusable to react to something without counting every factors in the equation.

Catholic Education. I studied for nine years in Catholic instutuions (4 high school. 5 college. 6 years of it in UST). In my 1st years of high school and college, my religion subjects said the same thing, that God created man with freewill and conscience. Therefore, man has the privilege to use this freewill in response to his conscience's notion of good and bad or listen to this conscience in response to the knowledge and wisdom gained through one's freewill.

A part of the article really alarmed me. It is part of the Sec Gen's memo:
“to safeguard the right of the students to a solid Catholic education.”
How bout the right of the students to inquire and be answered? If the student asked, especially if its pertinent on the topic, then I believe the teacher should answer the question. There are subjects that are more subjective like Communication subjects and such. Hindering these kind of discussions would hinder the students' holistic development and also the ability to exercise their freewill and conscience.

Attack! I was not born a Catholic. First and foremost, I was born as a human being. It was only after I was baptized as an infant that I became a Catholic. With that, my first loyalty is with the Human Race and not with the Catholic Church.

But being a Thomasian and a Catholic, I believe that I am simply using my God-given freewill supporting the RH Bill. The same can be said with the ADLSU Professors. If the students and Professors of UST also have the same view as we do, then they should not be compelled to refrain from expressing their views.

It was through my Thomasian Catholic Education, that I developed my critical thinking skills and was able to grasp the reality that the only constant thing in the world is change. I had deeply thought about it and made my choice. I stand firm to my belief that the RH Bill will spark the change that is needed to sustain our country.

Since God also gave you the ability to think just like He did me, feel free to live in the Spanish Colonial years where every words uttered by the prayles are absolute, and any contrary are works of the unfaithful. You have that choice. But don't drag the whole Thomasian Community with you. Most of us are "Thinking Catholics" that act on our own freewill and conscience and does not follow the every whim of the clergy.

If having Catholic Education means losing my freewill (having my own sentiments and acting on it), then you can keep your damn education! I'd take my freewill any day over those conservative teachings!

What I find the most absurd in the article was the branding of the ADLSU Professors as cowards, intellectual pretenders, and interlopers simply because they made the stand supporting the RH Bill. This is totally uncalled for!

Cowards. In my eyes, you dogs are the ones who are cowards! You are afraid of the inevitable change and then shield yourselves by announcing that you are "Faithful to the CBCP's ideals". Bleh! Makes me sick!

Intellectual Pretenders I don't grasp the idea how intelligence is tied to being faitful to the Church. I am not faithful but people will stand to atest that I am intelligent. And I will do the same with other intelligent not faithful people that I know. Prentenders? Hell! They just made a stand to support the RH Bill! I believe this is called Pagpapakatotoo. Unlike you conservative fools who still clings to the days of old when there is obviously a need for change.

Interlopers. I read this entry from the response of The La Sallian, the student publication of DLSU, to your editorial:

"Precisely because we are members of a Catholic University, following Pope John Paul II’s encyclical letter Ex Corde Ecclesiae and its challenge to university students, we encourage our individual staff to make personal judgments that may guide them to truth. Perhaps we may make recommendations, but we would never impose on the freedom of conscience (ECE II, Art. 2, sec. 4)."

The late Pope John Paul II himself said that the Church SHOULD NOT COMPEL anyone with the Church's views. One can advise but not compel! What does your mere bishops (CBCP) and mere priests (UST) can do against the highest clergy? In case you forgot, the Pope is successor to St. Peter: the de facto leader of the Apostles. Going with the tide of your conservative point view, it's obvious that your owner's actions are against this apostolic constitution by the late Pope.

The ADLSU Professors are simply undertaking this teaching from the late Pope: expressing their freewill. Therefore, you dogs have no right to call them as interlopers. The word is more suitable for you since you are using student paid funds to express sentiments that does not belong to the majority of the Thomasian student population.

Being a medium to express one's views, you should have observed open -mindedness. Not all people will have the same view as you do. The University is run by the Dominicans, ADLSU are run by Jesuits and Christian Brothers respectively. They don't give a damn care how the Dominicans run the University so it goes to show that you have no damn care how they run their schools!

Saying sorry in my point of view is unacceptable. If you will be sorry, why publish the article in the first place? Aren't you the ones who wrote it? You know by heart its content belittles other people and in turn will hurt someone's feelings. Again, you should have been more aware and open-minded that this will affect the explicit targets of the demeaning adjectives.

But alas, it seems open-mindedness is in such short supply in Rm 105 UST Tan Yan Kee Student Center that it became more of a dog cage than a student publication office.

Final word for the Lap Dogs
If you want to see what will happen to our country, try playing the Game Virtual Villagers. Any version will do. Impregnate all the women of age at the start of the game. Then impregnate them again as soon as they give birth. Watch how your villagers die one by one because nature's resources cannot sustain them all.

If I were you, I will stop reading outdated médical articles and start helping your owners to develop a feasible and concrete plan that will render the RH Bill pointless. Let's face it, your owners had never proposed a good alternative to the RH Bill. I agree with their remark that corruption is the root of poverty in our country, but until they do a good job of enlightening every single person who runs for a position in the government, I am with the RH Bill.

Also, kindly clarify to them that their proposal of the use of Rhythm method, since its a natural method of contraception, is still in essence Contraception. It has the same objective as its alternative: stop the union of sperm and egg. Tell them to weed out what is wrong in that logic.

You and your owner should strive to sway the "Thinking Catholics" to abandon the RH Bill because you have thought of a better plan. Borrowing the words of my friend Engr. Sed:

"I have said it before and I will say it until the day I die: Give me an argument that opposes the RH Bill that is not based, in any way, shape or form, on any religious belief, and I will listen. I may or may not change my mind, depending on how good the argument is, but the mere fact that the argument is grounded in human issues and not supernatural wishes is enough to catch my attention."
I concur 100%.

The new Thomasian Identity
To become a successful student leader in UST, you will need embody the three C's of the Thomasian Identity:

Competent. Compassionate. Committed.

And in my five years as a student-leader in the University, I believe that I have acquired the Thomasian Identity. But it seems that after leaving the University for two years, the Thomasian Identity has changed. From 3 C's it has become 5C's:

Competent. Compassionate. Committed. Conservative. Close-minded.

If this is the new Thomasian Identity then I will never be called a Thomasian again. The first three I can handle, but the last two... Never! I am simply not that type of person. Changing myself to simply conform and regain the right to be called a Thomasian again, I am not that naive.

I was never the type to blindly follow whatever is told and I survived 5 years in the University with this mindset. You can keep your Title of "THOMASIAN" if this entails that I will be called Conservative and Close-minded.

Message to the ADLSU Community
I would like to sincerely apologize for these lap dogs' awful barks. I assure you that most of the students and alumni of UST do not think the same. Even I was surprised that the venerable Tiger metamorphed to a lap dog.

Anyway, if you are planning a lemonade party, I would like to come. Litsunin natin tong mga tutang to. Then turn it to a Lemonade and Thomasian Lap Dog shawarma party.

Si Romarchie...

I have this friend na special place sa puso ko. No I'm not in love with him. But rather, I have this great admiration and deep gratitude to him. He's the only person, as of now, na feeling ko girl ako pagkasama ko sya.

Other than that, there no more things that can bridge us together.

Meron akong tatlong reasons sa pagtawag sa isang tao sa nickname, or not the usual address to him/her:

(1) Magaan ang loob ko sayo
(2) May respeto ako sayo
(3) Close tayo

Nung College marami akong ganto:

Sir Raniel - kasi officer sya ng CAT nung HS sya.
Kuya Jun - sya kasi yung 1st ever class president namin. At nagstick na sya til the end.
Alberchie - umm... 1st close friend nung College.
Hesed - yan talaga yung real name nya.

You get the picture.

Going back kay Romarchie.

De Guzman ako, tapos sya T yung first letter ng surname nya.

Come start ng majoring years, medyo nakakapag-usap na kami. Since we are taking the same subjects, nagpapalitan kami ng information regarding dun sa mga topics, quizzes, seatwork, etc.

Pero tingin ko, mas naging close kami nung 4th year second sem. Dahil ako'y may binagsak nanamang subject, Thermo 1, nilipat ako ni Ma'am Berna, Department Chair namin that time, sa section nila Romarchie, ang 4ChE-B.

by that time, free for all na ang seating arrangement.

Naging kaparty ko din sya sa SHIFT - a better Choice for a better ChES. Nakita nya how I work as a Campaign Manager which, for the record, none of my regular circle of friends had seen.

Morning ng third day yun. Free time yun eh. Maaga pa kasi. After breakfast. Nageexplore ang lahat. Nagpipicture lahat. Pero sadyang loner lang talaga ata kaming dalawa ni Romarchie kaya we ended up with each other's company.

After passing through a bridge, dumating kami dun sa likod burol. Nagkwekwentuhan kami habang naglalakad at umaakyat. nakwento nya na may burol na mas mataas pa dun na inaakyat baba nya sa province nila. May nikwento pa nga syang funny story about sa tita nya. Kitang kita from there yung retreat house.

Photobucket
Commemorative Picture ng pagkaupo ko sa putik
hindi po yan pupu

Isa pang gusto kong conversation with Romarchie eh nung batch meeting about sa aming 5th year field trip.

Hindi nya siguro alam na he has that special place in my heart. Hmmmmp... Sa Wednesday, I will be one step closer na magkasama kami ulet. Hopefully sa work in their province. Hihi!

istoykiometri

We used to have a TP4 Scholar taking up Chemical Engineering. Since alam ko kahit papano, ako yung nag-influence sa kanya na kunin yung course, I took the responsibility of personally providing him all the help that he needed. Unfortunately, bumagsak sya.

Favorite ko nga kasi to.

Yung pangalawa eh yung special techniques ko in solving. Binigay ko na lahat as in step by step kung pano ko iaanalyze yung problem. Ano yung mga Rule of Thumb na naformulate ko on my own. Lahat na ibinigay ko nah.

Yung pangatlo eh yung engineering way of solving it. Para in line with the engineering way of analysis.

Mass in equals Mass out

It doesn't get more simple than that.

Student. Teacher. Subject Matter.

Given na parepareho naman kami ng teacher. Given na ang Subject Matter ay the pinaka-basic basic of all the basic of the basic Chemical Engineering Subjects. Kya Conclusion. Estudyante na talaga ang may problema dito.

Di ko alam kung pano sila nakasurvive without developing yung analytical skills nila. In all honesty, di mo naman kelangan magreview sa Stoich eh, basta bear in mind lang yung napag-aralan sa Analytical Chem at Gen Chem like balancing, stoichiometric factors, concentration writing, etc.

It just shows na you nee dto understand the problem first and then think of a way to solve it.

In real life naman kasi wala naman sample problems na eksakto. Pwede mo lang gawing guide pero word for word the same. Wala.

And I do believe it applies here.

Wilberchie's Board Exam Experience Part 2

You can read the 1st part here.

Haru dyos ko! One year in the making ang sequel ng aking board exam experience! Wahahahha!!! Paxenxa na kasi for the longest time kasi wala akong time dahil nagwowork ako.

Alright! Lesgehitowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwn!!!

You have 6 hrs to answer 100 questions.

Normally eto yung mga Identifications at Fill in the Blanks.

If A = B and B = C, What is C2=AB?
a.Ab.B
c.A or Bd.None of the above

Panis diba? Maniniwala ba kayo kung sasabihin kong This is an actually board problem? Yes, this was a question nung nagtake ako.

IMPORTANT!!!
Isang beses lang basahin ang question. Tapos pag nagfall sa mga scenarios na ito ang nangyari after mo bashain ang question, jump to the next item:
(1) Kelangan isolve ang sagot
(2) Hindi mo naintindihan yung question
(3) Hindi mo alam yung sagot
(4) Hindi ka sure sa sagot

Isang very very useful tip.
>>>>>Idouble check ulet yung number, importante to!!!
>>>>>Ishade na ang sagot.

Since puro bilog bilog lang kasi makikita mo dun sa answer card, nakakalito talaga, kaya idouble check lagi bago magshade. Ako na nagsasabi, mahirap burahin ang mongol 2. Pwamis!!!

End of questionnaire? Go back to start!

3rd reading.

This happened to me!

[2] By Trial and Error - Refer to the 21-gon diagonal example from Part 1.

[3] By Back-Substitution - Parang ang unethical noh? Well, that's the downside of multiple choice. One of them is the true answer, you just need to use them all. Given na may oras ka. Dito pumapasok yung pagiging mabilis mo sa 1st and 2nd reading.

Pano mo malalaman? Instinct and Intuition.

[5] By Reading - Yes, you read it right!

Isulat mo din yun sa scratch mo with the caption: TENTATIVE POINTS.

Tandaan na mag-ingat sa pagsheshade ah!!!

Tapos na ulet? You know the Drill!!! Isa pa!!!

Homily. Ginamit mo na yung 5 ways to get the answer sa last reading pero wa epek. In other words, HULAAN MO NAH!!!! Dito na pumapasok yung Chamba factor!

GOGOGOGOGOGOOGOGO!!!

30% Chemical and Physical Principles
40% Chemical Engineering Principles
30% General Engineering Principles

At para makapasa, kelangan ang grades mo sa lahat ng exam ay greater than or equal to 50%, tapos yung average nung tatlo ay more than or equal to 70%.

i-solve ang iyong Theoretical grades - Sure Average at Tentative Average
Day 1 + Day 2 + Day 3
SP
or
TP
(0.3)
SP
or
TP
_(5)(0.4)_
4
SP
or
TP
(0.3)
= SURE AVERAGE or TENTATIVE AVERAGE

hmmmp... Sure Average ko ay 65.7. Tentative average ko ay 86.1.

Ang Grade ko ay...

In between ng dalawang yan! Whahahahahh!!!

Random tips!!!
In general stringent sa Sharp brands.
Laktawan. Intayin ang announcement. Pag malapit na matapos ang time, i-treat as (3) scenario question.
- Iwasan sumagot ng letter E. Trick letter yun.
- Kumaen pag gutom. Pwedeng kumen pag nageexam. Ako nga Egg and ham clubhouse sandwich ang dala ko at Jungle Juice! Elementary ang Peg!
- wag kabahan!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sayang sa oras kung mag-C-CR ka pa on the exam time.
- Wag nang mag-aral before the 1st day of exam and after the 1st and 2nd day. Magrelax. Matulog ng maaga. Walang idudulot ang pagcracram mo kundi kaba.
- Dumating ng maaga sa venue. Mas mawawala ang kaba mo.
- Wag nang magpapalit palit ng sagot. Nagiging sanhi yan ng pagkabagsak.
- Please read my article regarding the Legend of Uncertainty Principle: Totoo ba ang When in doubt, choose b or c'?

Goodluck Future Chemical Engineers!

Photobucket
Sigurado ako by now, may nakapagsabi na sayo yung technique na ginagawa nila pag multiple choice yung exam. Most likely, eto yun:
When in doubt, choose b or c.

In an attempt to prove the theory na may preference yung pag-automate sa b and c na answer...
-Gumawa ako ng program na nagrarandomize ng number from 1 to 4. 1 represents a, 2 for b, 3 for c and 4 for d. Simulating yung correct letter of answer.
-I made it to simulate the board exam na gumagawa ng 100 questions.
-1 batch = 1 run of the program
-I took 5 batches.

Eto yung source code: Click on the Text Area, press CTRL+A, then CTRL+C to copy the source code

Eto ang results...

Data
Photobucket
so ayan sa taas yung 5 batches ng data

Mean and Median
Photobucket
So as you can see, sa limang batches ng 50 exams, magkakalapit lang yung mean at median nung apat na sagot.

Relative Frequency Distribution
Photobucket
In general, pinakacommon yung 21-25 number range for all choices. Pumapangalawa yung 26-30. Or baliktad dun sa iba. Pero pwede natin maconclude na mataas yung frequency from the 21-30 range. Population mean is 25.5, so safe assumption na 25 questions na ang sagot ay isa sa choices out of 100 questions. Tig te-25 ang a, b, c at d.

Conclusion

Meron akong theory kung totoo man yung preference sa b and c. Pag hindi automated or manual yung pag sulat nung choices, ang mindset, itago sya sa gitna, which are b and c.

Eto yung human factor in making the exam.

Congratulations!

I would like to congratulate everyone who passed the recent June 2012 Nursing Licensure Exams! You deserve it whoever you are or wherever school you're from. Ang galing nyo!

I'm anticipating a full sized banner on my alma mater's Medicine Building Facade congratulating the Top Students of the Nursing Board, as well as the large chunk percentage of passers in the said exam.

Call me bitter, but its true. While I, together with my co-passers in the April 2011 Chemical Engineering Licensure examination, didn't even get a greeting from our own Faculty; Moreso from our own department.

I understand that the May 2011 Exams results were far from ideal. We failed to occupy any top spot and also only had 55 passing percentage. Still, it would have been fulfilling to be acknowledged nonetheless.

Buti nga yung November 2010 Passers, narecognize. They were called upon to provide testimonials on how they passed the board, which is a continuous project of the Chemical Engineering Society. I was there of course, to support those who will give their testimonials: Engr. Granada, Engr. Villanueva, Engr. Ramos, Engr. Abaricia, and of course, Engr. Dayao and to congratulate those who passed the board who were present.

I don't grasp the idea why there is stigma attached in passing the board in April. They say that the April exam is easier as compared to the November exam. But does this heresay constitute their right to disregard our accomplishments?

A person I idolize passed the April 2009 Chemical Engineering Licensure Examination. She brought back the bacon by bagging the the 9th highest score. But come School Year 2009-2010, virtually no one in the Faculty know that fact except those who are part of our department.

Nakakatawa! She's a member of our Faculty, yet she wasn't even recognized by mere mention of her name at the start of the first term. It was only when she was asked to take part in the testimonial that she was given the limelight. I know for a fact that our department didn't procure expenses for her congratulatory banner. I know who shelved money for it. I know because I was the one who edited the banner. (yes it's crappy I know!)

This is the first time that I would express the following statements into words so bear with me. These are my personal preparation from the the time I took my board.

When I took my board, I targeted the top. I wanted to claim the top spot for myself. That was my inspiration to study. Despite my busy schedule two months prior to the exam, I was still eager to read and review most of the topics. Please read this part for all the things that I read. I attended the testimonial so I can garner tips from the passers. I research on the fields about the members of the Board of Chemical Engineering's careers so I will have idea on what ChE technology they will focus on (epic fail). I enrolled in the refresher course despite the busy schedule; All in preparation to the top. But the exam had proven itself to be difficult (and out of this world) and as you know, I failed to take the spot, or any spots nine ranks below it. But I pride myself that at the end of the day, I was fortunate enough to pass the exam.

Putting my personal bitterness aside, I feel that acknowledging all of the passers would have been very meaningful. Some of us failed the earlier exam and retook it that April. It took them double the pressure, double the paranoia, and double the payment to pass the exam. Acknowledging them by simply saying that single word, "Congratulations", was enough to establish that sense of pride that despite of the earlier failure, they had come full circle and had reached the end of the 2nd hurdle of the Chemical Engineering journey. (the 1st one being, graduating) It is especially fulfilling if it comes from your mentors.

I only had two professors who conveyed their congratulatory greetings that summer of 2011. My thesis adviser, and my perennial Lab Professor (She was my 3 time lab teacher during the last 2 years). It is inexplicable how much those words mean to me. I am still very grateful for their words of encouragement. It is certainly one of the reasons why I want to strive harder for my career, because I believe that is the only way that I can repay them for their faith in my ability.

I know that our department is the only obstacle for our Faculty's goal to be a Center for Excellence. It is because of our department's constant failure to produce satisfactory passing percentage in the Licensure exams that hinder its realization. I recognize the change in curriculum as one of the steps to improve the current quality of education that we have in ChE in the University; But recent events made me realize that this goal of Excellence is far from reach.

During my interview for the ES instructor post, I was asked by a member of the Panel. You can read the question and my answer in this post. (this particular question inspired the question about the training camp instructor in the post) This panel member was a former professor. I really admire this professor because of his intellect; I know I'm not the only one since I share this admiration with one of my former collegues from the Central Student Council. This is why, I became more dumbfounded by his set of words:

You are there to teach, not to fail to students.

That's not in verbatim though. But that's the idea.

Ha! I'd like to hear him say that to all the Chairpersons of the different professional boards in PRC! And if he's going to say that those people are examiners and not teachers; He's barking at the wrong tree!

Part of being a teacher is performing the role of an examiner. Hence, we have major exams. If teachers are required to give passing grades to all the students regardless of their performance in these exams, why are those exams administered in the first place?

Wala. Panggatong. Pang-scratch. Pambenta, singkwenta isang papel sa junkshop.

I think that more than the revamp in the ChE Curriculum, the department should look into the reboot of teaching styles and teaching principles. Take note, these are two different things. As Principles are the objective of teaching while styles are methods of teaching. As a former student, I would like to the objective to be learning and confidence building, while the style is fun and innovative, yet brain-teasing (not brain crushing).

More importantly, they should start by recognizing their board passers. It would give a confidence boost to the passers and the next takers alike, not to mention, that sense of pride that we are graduates of...

The Department...

The Faculty...

The University...

which for the record, My pride of being a graduate from these is already at the utmost pinnacle of dissipation.

League of Extraordinary EC's

Shortly upon my arrival on the Medpav area, I was startled when a girl in a full white uniform called me by my nickname...

Wilberchie!

A smile emerged from my face when I immediately recognized who she was. She was a former co-staff in the CSC '09-'10. She was then the Executive Coordinator to the Vice President.

In a nutshell, an Executive Coordinator or EC is the right hand person of an Executive Board Member (EB). Each EB can have as many Executive Assistants or EA's as he/she deems necessary for him/her to properly execute his/her office but there is only one EC. This is because the EC is the de facto leader of all the EA's of the EB.

In my experience, the position of EC is crucial because the EC can function as a pseudo-EB. If there are inquiries regarding the projects spearheaded by an EB, the respective EC can answer all of it in case of the respective EB's absence. Usually in CSC projects when the respective EB spearheads a project, The EB is the Project Head and the Project director is the EC.

Back to Ms. EC to the VP, We engaged in a very lively conversation about our lives and about the time that had elapsed since our last meeting. Oh boy! It was sooooooooo fun! And right after talking to her, it made me resminisce the joyous time that I had during our short adventure in the CSC '09-'10.

For this part, I will be leaving out all the events regarding the office of the Auditor (of which I was the EC) and TP4 (which I was concurrently the project director). I will also be leaving out those EA's who were my fellow staff from the previous administration.

Out of the maximum six EC's that should have been working, I can only remember three who were actually working. Well, the office of the PRO did not need one since the PRO is one of the most extraordinary people that I know. I now baptize these Three working EC's as members of the League of Extraordinary EC's (LEECs). The members of the LEECs were as follows, in order of heirarchy of EB affiliation: Ms. EC to the VP, Mr. EC to the Treasurer, and myself, EC to the Auditor.

I first came to know them during the 1st CSC get to know circle session. I got to know them more during the 1st CSC major project which was the Thomasian Welcome Walk of that year. Ms. EC to the VP was handling the flag bearers of the different colleges; Mr. EC to the Treasurer was in the Tech booth; While I was heading the first aid pavillion as well as being a barker which entitled me to have walkie talkie. We might have been handling different functions in the program, but I think it made the 1st stepping stone of our friendship.

Throughout the course of that year, we ate together, shared jokes and laughs, shared the compulsory burden, and that made our CSC administration more fun and exciting.

I don't know if they can still remember, but there was a time that we three were sitting in our respective EB's desk doing paperwork. If I remember correctly, that was one of our busiest time, the SR week. I don't know about them, but I felt a great connection to them that time. I think it's because we were doing the same things.

>>>>Doing paperworks for projects
>>>>Doing inventory in our respective offices
>>>>Keeping records of everything about our offices
>>>>Basically keep things working smoothly for our EB's

And you know what is funny? As of today, we don't have the same political affiliation. Ms. EC to the VP is from LTC, Mr. EC to the Treasurer is from Lakas-Diwa, and I am from SIKLAB. BUt you know what? It didn't matter during our time in the CSC. We were there to be leaders, and I believe we became one to the best of our ability.

And after that CSC admnistration, we all became leaders in our own right. Ms. EC to the VP became the president of the CRS Student Council. Mr. EC to the Treasurer was still the go to guy for posters or other creative juju stuff. And moi, became a licensed Chemical Engineer and the 1st ChE Alumni of SIKLAB.

Congratulations League of Extraordinary EC's!!! You guys are soooooooooooooo...

EXTRAORDINARY!!

Evaluating Limits: Algebra Method

Evaluate the following limits
1) lim
x→∞
____7x -1____
√(4x2 + 3x + 8)
2) lim
x→-∞
__2x2 - x + 5__
4x3 - 1

Solution:
STEP 1: Separate the original expression to two fractional terms
= ______7x______
√(4x2 + 3x + 8)
- _____1_____
√(4x2 + 3x + 8)
STEP 2: Bring down the numerator of the first fractional term to become the denominator of the denominator
= ______7______
_√(4x2 + 3x + 8)_
x
- _____1_____
√(4x2 + 3x + 8)
STEP 3: Insert the x term inside the radical sign and manipulate.
= ______7______
√(4x2/x2 + 3x/x2 + 8/x2)
- _____1_____
√(4x2 + 3x + 8)
= ______7______
√(4 + 3/x + 8/x2)
- _____1_____
√(4x2 + 3x + 8)
STEP 4: Evaluate the limit
= ______7______
√(4 + 3/ + 8/2)
- _____1_____
√(4(∞)2 + 3(∞) + 8)
= ______7______
√(4 + 0 + 0)
- _____1_____
√(∞ + ∞ + 8)
= _7_
√(4)
- _1_
= _7_
2
- 0
= _7_

Application of Derivative: Solving coefficients of an equation

Solve for the numerical coefficients:

y = ax3 + bx2 + cx + d

if it passes through (0,3) and has a point of inflection point and horizontal tangent line at (1,2).

STEP 1: Get y’ and y”

y' = 3ax2 + 2bx + c

y” = 6ax + 2b

STEP 2: Substitute the given point s in the given equation.

Substituting (0,3)…
a(0)3 + b(0)2 + c(0) + d = 3
d = 3 ← Eq (1)

Substituting (1,2)
a(1)3 + b(1)2 + c(1) + d = 3
a + b + c + d = 2 ← Eq (2)

STEP 3: Since we have a horizontal tangent line at pt (1,2) we can use that point at y’ = 0.

Substituting (1,2) in y’ = 0
3a(1)2 + 2b(1) + c = 0
3a + 2b + c = 0 ← Eq (3)

STEP 4: Since (1,2) is a point of inflection, then y” = 0

Substituting (1,2) in y” = 0.
6a(1) + 2b = 0
6a + 2b = 0 ← Eq(4)

Solving simultaneously:

Using Eq(4), transpose 6a to the other side and divide by 2.
2b = -6a
b = -3a

Substitute -3a to the b in Eq(2) and Eq(3) and substitute d =3 from Eq(1) to Eq(2). Solve values of a and c.
a - 3a + c + 3 = 2
-2a + c = -1

3a + 2(-3a) + c = 0
3a – 6a + c= 0
-3a + c = 0

Subtracting:
-2a + c = -1
-3a + c = 0
a = -1

Solving for b and c:
b = -3a
b = -3(-1)
b = 3

-3a + c = 0
c = 3a
c = 3(-1)
c = -3

Therefore we the equation:

y = -x3 + 3x2 - 3x + 3

Continuity: Solve for a b c

Solve for a b and c…
f(x)=
{ ax2 + bx
bx + c
x<2 x≥2
if it satisfies:
1>>> f(x) is continuous
2>>> f(3) = 2
3>>> limx→-1 f(x) = -3
Since we have three unknowns, to answer this, we need three equations. We can derive those by using the three (3) satisfaction criteria.

To satisfy the first Criterion f(x) is continuous, the Left Hand Sum and the Right Hand Sum should be equal.

ax2 + bx = bx + c

ax2 + bx = bx + c

ax2 = c

Substitute x=2.

a(2)2 = c

4a =c ← Eq (1)

Expressing the second criterion, f(3) =2, in equation form we have:

b(3) + c = 2

3b + c = 2 ← Eq (2)

We used bx + c because x=3 falls under x≥2 range.

For the third criterion, limx→-1 f(x) = -3, simply evaluate the limit in the equation where x=-1 falls under.

a(-1)2 + b(-1) = -3

a – b = -3 ← Eq (3)

----

We now have three equations so we can solve simultaneously:

Substitute Eq(1) to Eq(2)

4a + 3b = 2

Add thrice Eq(3) from Eq (2)

4a + 3b = 2
3a - 3b = -9

7a = -7
a = -1

a - b = -3
(-1) - b = -3
b = 3 - 1
b = 2

4a = c
4(-1) = c
c = -4

a = -1; b = 2; c = -4.

Teachers no more

It was one of those sleepless nights that I was able to reflect on my life as a student. I came to the realization that there are these special Professors that really made a mark on me. It may have been as simple as being nice to our class or being rigid and strict. But these are the elements that made them leave an imprint in my life.

Unfortunately, they are not affiliated with our department anymore. I learned their dismissal were far from amicable which greatly saddened me because not only are they graduates of the department (cum laudes to boot), they are also good mentors. In my point of view, it was an outrage taking them off the department.

Writing my reflection on each of my former professor made me emotional. I was tearing up when I came to realize that my college life would be different had they not be my teachers.

For more information about the teacher type please refer to this this blog post

Teacher type: Technophile-Basic, DBS, Student Buddy

When I first heard that this particular former professor of mine was dismissed, I immediately thought:

"FUCK! WHY!?"

Yes.

I just said those two words.

Actually I said them in the vernacular, so that means I was really pissed. Why you ask? Here's why!

1. She's really nice! Anyone who will say otherwise will drop dead after 5 seconds.
2. She's really good! She teaches very well; Is able to explain things that some professors find hard to explain.
3. She has the HEART! She will teach other subjects if we ask her to (like that time she taught us Kinetics). She is much more lenient in giving points to exams.

Hmmmp. I'd always said that the only reason why I passed Unit Operations 3 and Unit Operations 4 is because "she" is our Calculations Lab Instructor. Whatever I didn't learn in the lecture, I will learn it in Lab class. (well except Kremser, I didn't understand it at all!) She was the first to break the good news to me that I passed Unit 3, I thought I was one of those on the edge of glory but she told me that I already passed the subject and that I had a high score. Really? 2.75 is high already? Well, not that I'm complaining since I flunked all prelims quizzes and the Prelims (stupid Kremser Equation!) yet still passed the subject.

She's really an inspiration for me. If ever I would become a teacher in the future, I would strive to be just like her. She cares for the students, probably because our age difference was not that much that she seems to relate to us; but she cares nonetheless. And her aura is just uplifting, I don't remember any class that we had a bad time with her since she is usually welcoming and homey. Sort of like a big sister.

Haaaay... Too bad the next generation ChE's-in-training won't have the feeling of having an Ate in the Faculty, especially one that teaches those crucial major subjects.

Teacher type: Technophile-Advanced, Genius-the Wizard, Firestarter, The Orator-meaningful, HAITE

If you're going to ask me what is my favorite ChE subject, my answer would be Stoichiometry and Particulate Technology. But if you're going to ask me from what subject did I learned the most, my answer would be my class in Chemical Process Industries.

When he first entered our room that first Saturday of SY '08-'09, I was terrified. I remember him as the orange guy who threatened our first year section; The incident more popularly known as the Toto incident.

"Ano section nyo!? ChE!? Humanda kayo sa higher years nyo!"

or something to that extent.

Ever since the time he scolded me from being absent in his class, I never made an attempt to ditch his class again. I was absent that one time because I was in charge of being a tour guide for the freshmen that year. But I was still scolded. T_T

CPI is a very special class for me because, just as I said, this is the class where I learned the most. It might be that the course itself deals with many sub-fields but more than that, I think it is because of my teacher.

It was the first time that I had a class that was not spoon fed. Although he tried his best to bring the level of the topics one notch down, it is still up to us, the students, to really stand up and meet him halfway. Most noteworthy of all is that he always relates his lessons to cooking or food preparation. For me, that was really an effective approach because I have background in cooking and baking. That's the reason why I can easily grasp most of the information that he was trying to convey.

I can only remember two questions that he asked me: 'How do make Latik?' and 'What is the effect of using Aluminum foil in baking?'. I answered the Latik part correctly, as for the other one, I wasn't really aware that the foil was not just used to prevent browning or crusting; Using the different sides will have different effect in the cooking process. I think this is the best lesson that I learned from that. Although he asked me to perform the experiment at home using the different sides of the foil, I still don't have a muffin pan eh. hihiihi!!!!

What I also love in this subject is that no matter how much I eat before class, I will be hungry again after. It just means that I am really using my brain cells to be able to understand the lesson. Also, I like the unorthodox method of testing our abilities of understanding. This is the only major subject I think that we had an essay type of questions. Like what type of feeding to use in the process of Condensed milk, and the change in settings of a dryer for mushrooms that had rainfall the previous night.

He also imparted wisdom as a one of the few in-field practicing Chemical Engineers affiliated with the department. I really think it makes a big difference if your practicing, because you can easily notice the difference in approach of teaching with those simply in the academe. As the academic people tend to be more idealistic, those from the field tend to be more realistic. This is especially true in terms of exam questions.

Sometimes, he would tell us stories about the nature of his work. Sometimes useful, sometimes not. But I do remember that he was the one who told us about the Octane Number, the RON and MON, and knocking. That's the main reason why I was able to comment on this issue. Reminders of not being "tatanga tanga" during plant visits.

That statement is really hard to get off your mind.

I really feel that he is a big loss in the department. He will leave a big void in the ChE's-in-training school life that no professors in the department can fill. They will not receive the wisdom that we received from him. They will not be able to experience how it is to be mentored by one of the brightest mind in our engineering field.

GOODLUCK!

Usapang Algebra

Kakaloka yung factoring exercises!

#1/p45. 16x2 - 8xy + y2 + 12x - 3y + 2

For this type of expressions, eto yung mga sagot sa Product of two Trinomials. Makikita nyo kagad yun pag may tatlong components: may x and y in 2nd power; May xy term; at may linear x and y plus constant.

Let us review yung actual Product of two Trinomials:

(A1 + B1 + C1)(A2 + B2 + C2) = ...

A1A2 + A1B2 + A1C2 + B1A2 + B1B2 + B1C2 + C1A2 + C1B2 + C1C2

Now in the sample expression, yung x and y in the 2nd power terms: 16x2 tska y2, ay parehong perfect square. Therefore we can assume na yung both 1st and 2nd terms (A and B) are the same for the two Trinomials. Meaning:

A1 = A2 = A = 4x --> square root ng 162
B1 = B2 = B = +/- y --> square root ng y2

Remember, this is just an assumption. One thing that you wil llearn in engineering eh lagi kayong mag-aassume.

So palitan na natin lahat nag A1 at A2 to the gerneral term A. Tapos yung mga B1 at B2 to the general term B.

Yung product ay magigig ganito na:

= AA + AB + AC2 + AB + BB + BC2 + AC1 + BC1 + C1C2

SIMPLIFYING:
= A2 + 2AB + AC2 + B2 + BC2 + AC1 + BC1 + C1C2

SIMPLIFYING FURTHER FACTORING OUT C1 AND C2
= A2 + 2AB + (A + B)C2 + B2 + (A + B)C1 + C1C2

MORE FURTHER SIMPLICIFACTION: FACTORING (A + B)
= A2 + 2AB + (A + B)(C1+C2) + B2 + C1C2

REARRAGING:
= A2 + 2AB + B2 + (A + B)(C1+C2) + C1C2

LOOKS FAMILIAR???
Photobucket

Factor natin yung 12x - 3y magiging (4x - y)(3). Ano napapansin nyo sa (4x - y) hindi ba yun yung (A + B) natin? Therefore yung 3 ay C1+C2. Tapos yung square root ng y2 ay -y pala dahil sa lumabas after factoring out 3.

Masosolve natin yung C1+C2 ng ganito:

C1+C2 = 3 -> eq 1
C1C2 = 2 -> eq 2

you have two equations with two unknowns, masosolve nyo yung dalawa respectively.

(4x - y + 2) (4x - y +1)

ANG HABA!!!

Solve naman natin ngayon using the improved WILBERCHIE Method!!!

16x2 - 8xy + y2 + 12x - 3y + 2

Dahil perfect square ang x and y in 2nd power, assume mong preho yung 1st term at positive sya, assume mo rin na pareho yung 2nd term

A = 4x
B = +/- y

Divide natin yung A sa xy term

-8xy/4x = -2y --> 2 times B, special property pag pareho ang 1st and 2nd terms.

-2y/2 = -y --> B

Divide mo naman ngayon yung nasolve mong B Dun sa y term;

-3y/-y = 3 --> sum of the constants.

or yung A sa x term

12x/4x = 3 --> sum of the constants.

Product of constants yung given constant term sa expression = 2.

By logic, Factors of 2 whose sum is 3. Answer: 2 and 1.

Final Answer: (4x - y + 2) (4x - y +1)

#2/p45. x8 +64

Completing the Square: ibigay yung nawawalang constant Mid term = 2*sqrt(1st and last terms)
=x8 + 16x4 + 64 - 16x4
=(x8 + 16x4 + 64) - 16x4

factor using PST:
=(x4 + 8)2 - 16x4

Factor using Difference of Two squares
=(x4 + 8 + 4x2)(x4 + 8 - 4x2) <-- Final Answer
